With the school holidays once again upon us – and the rain making its usual appearance – it’s fair to say we’re getting a very British start to the summer!
Still, I know it’ll take more than a bit of drizzle to stop families across Barnsley from making the most of the holidays and spending some well-earned quality time together.
We’re lucky in Barnsley to have so many affordable, family-friendly activities right on our doorstep. Whether you’re after a day of culture, creativity, sport, or just some fresh air, there’s something for everyone this summer.
When it comes to culture, one of our biggest success stories is Cannon Hall Museum – recently confirmed as the most visited free visitor attraction in Yorkshire! It’s a brilliant day out, and it’s just one of the fantastic museums in our borough, with Experience Barnsley, Elsecar Heritage Centre, Worsbrough Mill, and the Cooper Gallery also offering exciting, educational, and free activities throughout the summer. For sporty kids, Barnsley’s Healthy Holiday Clubs are running from 28 July to 22 August. There’s football in Athersley, gymnastics in Carlton, swimming in Royston, and much more. It’s a great way to stay active, make new friends, and have fun!
Creative kids are also well catered for in our town this summer. A range of creative workshops – from watercolours to creative writing to comic-book drawing – are on offer. Budding performers can also take part in the Young Civilians Open Mic Night on 6 August and get a chance to shine on stage.
Prefer to listen rather than perform? Then you won’t want to miss Barnsley’s Art Abart Tarn Live Music Night at the Civic on 1 August.
If you’re looking to get outdoors, some of Yorkshire’s best green spaces are on your doorstep! Whether it’s a picnic in Locke Park, a wander around Monk Bretton Priory, or a visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, there’s no shortage of places to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air.
And if you fancy combining a bit of nature with some local charm, Pot House Hamlet in Silkstone is a great spot for a stroll, a bite to eat, and a browse of its independent shops.
Of course, summer wouldn’t be summer without a good old-fashioned fete or gala. On 26 July, there are galas in St Helen’s and Grimethorpe, followed by Carlton on 3 August and Mapplewell on 6 September. These brilliant community events are made possible by dedicated volunteers – and they’re always a great day out for the whole family!
So, whatever the weather and whatever your plans, I hope you find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy everything Barnsley has to offer over the coming months.
