School visits to Parliament

I’ve met some brilliant young people and dedicated teachers in schools and colleges across Barnsley. I’m always impressed by the questions students ask, their interest in the world around them, and the hard work their teachers put into giving them the best possible start in life.

That’s why I’m keen to encourage schools in Barnsley to take advantage of the opportunity to visit Parliament and see how our democracy works for themselves.

Schools can arrange a free visit to Parliament’s Education Centre in Westminster, where pupils can take part in a curriculum-linked workshop and enjoy a guided tour of the historic Palace of Westminster.

I know that the cost of travelling to London can be a challenge for schools. Thankfully, Parliament offers a travel subsidy scheme to help schools and educational groups from outside London and the South East make the journey.

Eligible groups can claim back between 60% and 85% of their travel costs, subject to maximum limits. Schools in Barnsley fall into Category B of the scheme. You can find out more about eligibility, how much support is available and how to apply in Parliament’s travel subsidy guide.

Bringing Parliament to your school

If a trip to Westminster isn’t possible, Parliament can come to you!

Parliament’s outreach team offers free assemblies for primary, secondary and post-16 students, helping young people understand how Parliament works, what MPs and members of the House of Lords do, and how they can make their voices heard.

It’s a good opportunity to bring politics to life in the classroom and show young people that their views matter, wherever they live.
